About the study

Study complete

We undertook the Prospect Primary School Precinct Traffic Study in consultation with the City of Prospect and the Department for Education.

The precinct study considered the access, safety, movement and parking around both Prospect Primary School and Rosary School. The study area (below) included the road sections bounding the schools and within the school zones, Gladstone Road, Burrage Place, Staples Court, Olive Street, Braund Road and the interface with Prospect Road.

Feedback from the community since late 2023 has been taken into consideration and helped to inform the study.

Outcomes of the study

Potential measures identified as an outcome of the Study are:

Location Proposed actions

Precinct wide

  • Council providing consistent school kiss drop parking control signs, to improve use, education and compliance, supplemented by school boundary fence signs.
  • Schools contacting South Australia Police to request school zone speed enforcement during school peak times should unsafe road behaviour, speeding be observed and ongoing.
  • Schools providing regular communication on road safety and parking in school precincts and use of school kiss and drop zones.

Gladstone Street

  • Investigate traffic control measures to restrict unsafe u-turn movements, by reducing road width and narrowing road environment to reduce speeds.
  • Remove kerb extension on southeast corner to extend kiss and drop and improve entry and reduce queuing and congestion.
  • Council has recently undertaken parking improvements related to Rosary School and the school has progressed improving access to the on-site kiss and drop.

Olive Street

  • Increase school kiss and drop length at eastern end.
  • Provide consistent timed parking controls and review extent of controls on northern side of road.
  • Investigate informal crossing point with kerb build-outs and pedestrian ramps in between ELC and oval entry to reduce road width and narrow road environment to reduce speeds.
  • Completed improving pedestrian access to school and community oval.

Braund Road

  • Improve safety, visibility northbound to school emu crossing.
  • Investigate priority pedestrian treatments to existing raised intersections for safe movement of pedestrians and cyclists.

Staples Court

  • Install a new 25km/h school zone to improve safety when children are present.

Burrage Place

  • consider demand and feasibility for 90-degree parking on western side of road to increase short term parking availability.

These outcomes have informed the City of Prospect’s Integrated Transport Plan, as all local roads in the precinct are roads managed by the Council.  The Council has commenced consideration and action of these recommendations, with funding allocated in financial year 2025-2026.  These actions will be delivered progressively and are subject to annual budget allocations and grant funding. For further information please refer to the Integrated Transport Plan | City of Prospect.
