Traffic management study underway

About the study
The Rundle Street Movement Study looks at how people move along and use Rundle Street in Kent Town, with a focus on improving safety, accessibility and the overall street experience for everyone.
The study was undertaken in response to community feedback and concerns about how the street is currently working. To better understand these issues, we collected detailed data on how different people use the street – whether walking, riding, driving, catching the bus, or accessing local businesses and homes.
These insights will help guide future decisions to create a safer, more accessible and more welcoming street for residents, businesses and visitors.
What We Looked At
As part of the study, we collected detailed movement data, including:
- People walking: how many people are using the street, where they cross, and peak times.
- People riding: cycling activity and how cyclists interact with traffic.
- Traffic conditions: vehicle volumes, traffic flow, and congestion points.
- Driver behaviour: lane use, turning movements, and compliance.
- Parking: availability, how long cars stay, and how spaces are used.
- Buses: service frequency, stop activity, and passenger numbers.
- Crash history: patterns and known safety issues.
- On-site observations: how the street functions in real time.
What we found
The study identified several key issues:
- Crossing Rundle Street is difficult, with lots of people walking but few safe places to cross.
- Cyclist safety is a concern – particularly at The Parade West intersection.
- Traffic volumes and turning movements cause delays and increase safety risks.
- Parking demand exceeds supply, with many vehicles overstaying.
- Sightlines at key driveways are limited, creating conflict between vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists.
Proposed Interventions
- Safer speed limit
Slowing traffic will reduce the severity of crashes, make it safer to cross the street, and create a calmer environment for everyone.
- Replace pedestrian refuge with wombat crossing
Install a wombat crossing to replace the current pedestrian refuge and create a safer crossing point.
- Traffic Signal
Installing signals will help manage turning movements, reduce conflict between vehicles and cyclists, and provide safer crossing opportunities for pedestrians.
- Green bike lanes and better sight distance at Bunnings Driveway
Green bike lanes will be added at key locations to make cyclists more visible, particularly at high-risk areas like the Bunnings driveway.
- Wombat crossings
Raised “Wombat” crossings are proposed at key locations to slow vehicles and give pedestrians priority.
Next steps
Community engagement for the Rundle Street Movement Study has now closed. We would like to thank everyone who took the time to provide feedback and share their local knowledge and experiences. A What We Heard report summarising the feedback received during the consultation period has been finalised and is now available.
Community feedback, together with the study data, will be used to prepare a comprehensive report. The report will help to inform potential future transport upgrades for Rundle Street, Kent Town.
