Rail network access times for contractors

Our rail network requires planned maintenance work to keep people moving.

Work access times

To reduce disruption to train and tram services during peak demand, planned work must follow certain rules.

Peak hours

No planned work is allowed on business days at these times:

  • from 6:00 am to 9:00 am
  • from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm.

Special event days

Work is not usually allowed during special events. Urgent work may be approved. Other requests will be reviewed based on how much they affect services.

Find a list of special events on Adelaide Metro.

Adelaide Oval and major events

No work is allowed three hours before or after an event. Work can happen during the event itself.

Approval is given on a case-by-case basis.

Dedicated work periods

Some planned work can only happen on our rail network when no trains or trams are running. We refer to these dedicated work periods as:

  • After Last Before First (ALBF)
  • extended ALBF.

After Last Before First

ALBF is the work period between:

  • the last train or tram service finishing; and
  • before the first service starts.

Scheduled services are not affected or cancelled during this period.

ALBF times

Times differ for train and tram networks.

NetworkDays General ALBF window
Train Mondays to Fridays 1:45 am to 4:30 am
Train Weekends 1:45 am to 5:30 am
Tram Every day 1:30 am to 4:00 am

Extended ALBF

An extended ALBF is an extended period of work that requires scheduled services to be cancelled. It occurs when they are cancelled:

  • before the last scheduled service has stabled; and/or
  • after the first scheduled service has begun.

Any cancellation of services and track access for extended ALBF work must be:

  • discussed with the Network Access team
  • approved by the Rail Commissioner (or delegate).

Access conditions

Track access and work times are subject to change. Final work times must be agreed on with our Network Access teams.

Third parties may be refused entry, or asked to stop work and leave the network. This can happen without notice. We are not liable for these changes. For example, we might do this for an emergency.

Time on track is determined by the location of works, isolation and operational requirements. Actual track access and working times will need to be determined with our Department, Keolis Downer Adelaide and Torrens Connect.

We and our operators, KDA and Torrens Connect, have the right to decline any access to the Adelaide Metro Passenger Rail Network.
