IMPORTANT INFORMATION
Government Employee Housing (GEH) is not a choice based program therefore to receive subsidised rent, you must accept the house allocated. If you decline the property offered, you are electing to opt out of using the GEH program.
GEH provide unfurnished housing of varying sizes. GEH only provides furnished housing in the APY Lands. The range of housing is diverse and includes mainly older houses, with some upgraded houses and modern contemporary houses. To assist GEH to allocate suitable housing, you are requested to provide as much relevant information as possible.
Housing is allocated to applicants according to need, this is assessed on your family composition and is clearly defined in the allocation policy. GEH makes every effort to ensure individual requirements of employees are taken into account, however due to the limited amount of Housing stock, no guarantee can be provided that all needs will be met. GEH will look to allocate housing in the location in which you are employed, however, housing within 40kms of the location of employment will be considered if no owned stock is available within the town. Shared housing may become necessary where local supply cannot meet demand from applicants.
Approval for the eligibility of subsidised housing is the responsibility of the applicant’s employing agency. GEH contacts the employing agency to obtain the approval for eligibility for each applicant. Allocation of appropriate housing is related to the timing of this approval and housing availability.
All arrangements for furniture removal are the responsibility of the employee and their employing agency.
Relocations
A tenant may seek relocation only when there is a permanent change in their personal circumstances or family composition / size. Where a tenant requested relocation is accepted by GEH, the tenant is responsible for their own removal and all associated costs.
GEH may be required to initiate a tenant’s relocation under certain circumstances – e.g. where a private lease is expiring or where an owned or leased house is contracted for sale with no option for government to remain as tenant. In these circumstances, GEH organise and pay for removals and pay for connection and disconnection fees.

GEH is legislated under the Public Employees Housing Act 1987 to provide subsidised rental housing for eligible public sector employees. The level of rental subsidy is established by a GEH Rental Agreement and varies according to the employing agency and location.
Tenant rents are paid fortnightly in arrears via payroll deduction and are not negotiable. Please note that timing for the first rental deduction from your payroll can take up to 4 weeks.
Rent, water and any other charges payable by an employee for housing provided under this Act will be deducted via payroll deduction.
GEH aims to allocate housing to meet your requested occupancy date. Greater lead time will assist GEH to meet your anticipated occupancy date (You cannot move into a property on a weekend, public holiday or during the last week of December/first week of January). Factors such as timing of approvals, maintenance, high demand and availability of houses can all affect allocation time frames. As a guide, you should expect to be notified of an allocation of housing 14-21 days prior to your requested occupancy date. You do not need to call GEH, you will be contacted when an allocation has been made.
GEH will advise you if it cannot provide housing by your requested occupancy date. If this occurs, you will need to contact your employing agency to negotiate alternative arrangements.
Authority to lease a house from the private market lies solely with GEH. This will occur only when there are no suitable vacant houses within existing stock.

In the APY Lands & some remote locations your employing agency may require single employees to share a house in some communities, and the sharing tenant will be determined by the employing agency.
Pets
*
Note: Renters must seek permission from the landlord (GEH) to keep a pet and they are liable if the pet causes damage.
I understand that I must comply with the Local Council’s requirements and South Australia’s dog and cat desexing law, including the following.
- Dogs and cats must be registered with the Local Council.
- Dogs and cats must be microchipped.
- Desexing is compulsory in SA for all dogs and cats born after 1 July 2018. Cats and dogs have to be desexed by the age of six months, or within 28 days of when taking possession of a new animal.
I acknowledge that once GEH has allocated housing to me, a Pet Application will be completed on my behalf, as per the Residential Tenancies Act 1995.
