Your safety in Government Employee Housing

It is important to familiarise yourself with the safety features of a new home and understand what you can do to keep yourself and your family safe.

Fire safety

Tenants are strongly encouraged to prepare a home fire escape plan in the event of a fire. You can use the Metropolitan Fire Service’s home fire escape plan.

Smoke alarms

All Government Employee Housing is fitted with a smoke alarm. These smoke alarms have a non-replaceable battery. After they have reached their 10-year lifetime, the landlord must replace it.

Understanding your smoke alarm

  • The green light on your smoke alarm tells you that power is present.
  • The red light will flash every 40 seconds to show that the alarm has performed a test on the smoke chamber.
  • You can press the hush/test button to silence alarms. The red light will flash to let you know it has been silenced, then the alarm will reset after 10 minutes. Never silence an alarm unless you are sure there is no smoke or fire.
  • Manually test your smoke alarm weekly by gently pressing the hush/test button until the alarm sounds.
  • If the unit beeps but the red light does not flash at the same time, this may mean the smoke chamber is contaminated and needs cleaning.
  • If the smoke alarm beeps and the red light flashes at the same time, it means the battery is low and the entire unit must be replaced.

If your smoke alarm needs replacing, contact your landlord.

Asbestos

Many Government Employee Housing properties are older houses. This means that some properties may have asbestos containing materials.

Before you hang any pictures or make any changes to the property, contact the Housing Officer. They will be able to check the materials in the house and make sure you don't come into contact with asbestos.

Security

Each house must have:

  • lockable screen door– so tenants can safely screen visitors
  • external doors – fitted with a lock. The lock can be operated with a key on the outside and unlocked from the inside without a key
  • A latch on external windows that can be opened
  • front external light fitting, but only at the rear where there is separate rear access. For example, a laneway, and where evidence of risk to tenants can be proven.
