South Australian Transport Subsidy Scheme

The South Australian Transport Subsidy Scheme (SATSS) helps cover taxi fares for people who can’t use public transport on their own.

You can use SATSS if you:

  • have a permanent or severe disability that stops you from using public transport alone
  • are waiting for an assessment result (for up to six months).

SATSS offers:

  • a 75% subsidy (up to $30 per trip) if you use a wheelchair
  • a 50% subsidy (up to $20 per trip) if you do not use a wheelchair.

Apply for the scheme

Find out how to apply for the taxi fare subsidy scheme on SA.GOV.AU.

To get updates and notifications about a trip, you can register to receive a text or email on the South Australian Transport
Subsidy Scheme website.

If you don’t qualify for SATSS, you may be eligible for a non-SATSS Access Taxi Card. This card lets the driver claim the lifting fee for your trip.

Current members

If you hold a SATSS member ID card, you can visit the SATSS website to:

  • register a carer or contact
  • report a lost or stolen ID card
  • learn how to keep track of your trips
  • learn what to do if you forget your ID card.

How it works

  1. Book your trip through the metropolitan Access Taxi Centralised Booking Service or a country taxi operator with an accessible vehicle. Operators must hold accreditation.
  2. Tell them you have a SATSS member ID card and if you will be claiming part of your trip or paying in full.
  3. Show your card to the driver at the start of your trip so they can scan it.
  4. If you signed up for notifications, your carer or contact will get a text or email with a link to view a map of your trip. The link will be valid for 2 hours.
  5. At the end of your trip, the driver will scan your card again.
  6. You can use up to three vouchers or trips when paying for your journey:
    • One voucher or trip for fares under $41
    • Two vouchers or trips for fares between $41 and $81
    • Three vouchers or trips for fares over $81.
  7. If you are paying for your trip in full, the driver will record that the trip was not subsidised. These trips will not be removed from your balance.
  8. If you gave your email when you registered for the card, you will get an email summary of your trip and fare.
  9. The driver will receive the $25 lifting fee to cover their time helping you in and out of the Access Taxi.

The driver must not ask you to pay the lifting fee or any part of it. If you are asked to pay, contact us straight away.

Lifting fee

A lifting fee is available for Access Taxi drivers. This fee is paid to drivers to provide the lifting service for eligible Access Taxi trips. This will help ensure customers receive a consistent, accessible and reliable service.
