You know your brakes are failing if your pedal sinks to the floor when you brake.
If this happens:
- Pump the pedal several times to see if you can raise enough pressure in the brakes’ hydraulic system to bring the vehicle to a safe stop.
- If this doesn't help, put the handbrake on, increasing the pressure gradually. Sudden pressure can lock the back wheels and cause a skid. Change to a lower gear.
- Don't continue to drive if your brakes have failed. Arrange for your car to be towed to a mechanic who can fix the brakes.
