Schools

Be extra careful near schools, especially at school start and finish times. There will be children around, and lots of traffic.

  • You must slow down to 25 km/h:
    • in school zones
    • at children's crossings when the lights are flashing
    • when passing a school bus that has stopped to pick up or drop off children.
  • On school days, you must slow down to 40 km/h where signed on roads near schools from:
    • 8:00 am to 9:30 am
    • 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm.
  • If you are picking up or dropping off children, park away from areas where children are moving around.

It is always best to be safe, so keep your car as far away as you can from groups of children.

  • School zones are signposted, and zigzag lines are marked on the road where possible.
These lines show you are approaching a school zone.
  • 25km/h speed limits apply within school zones, at children's crossings when the lights are flashing and when passing a school bus that has stopped to pick up or drop off children. School zones are signed and zigzag lines are marked on the road where practicable, to indicate that you are approaching a school zone.
