People walking

Always be careful if there are people nearby.

  • Older people and people with disabilities might need longer to cross a road. Give them the time they need.
  • People in crowds - especially if they've been drinking - could easily fall in front of your car. Slow down.
  • Watch out for children near schools, near shopping centres, and playing on the street. They can forget there are cars on the road, and run in front of you.
  • Keep a look out for people waiting to cross the road. Sometimes they might not see you approaching in your car and step into the road.
  • For vulnerable road users, such as pedestrians, small differences in travelling speed can mean the difference between life and death. If you collide with a pedestrian, death or serious injury is likely even at low speeds.
  • Nearly one in every 10 road deaths in South Australia is a pedestrian.
