Proposed design: Circuit safety
MotoGP™ and Supercars operate under some of the most rigorous safety standards in global motorsport. There are no compromises when it comes to rider and driver safety. This focus on safety has been a critical consideration throughout the circuit design process.
The proposed circuit design has been informed by detailed collaboration between the South Australian Motor Sport Board, Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme, MotoGP and Supercars Australia to ensure safe and exciting racing across all formats. Specialist input has been provided by former 125cc and 250cc World Champion and current MotoGP Safety Advisor Loris Capirossi, and five-time Supercars champion Mark Skaife.
While every effort has been made to minimise environmental impacts, some circuit elements are essential to ensure the circuit meets the safety standards required for these major motorsport events.
Run-off areas
These are large areas of asphalt or gravel outside the limits of the track designed to reduce the impact in the event of a crash.
Wherever possible, they have been kept within the existing road footprint. Where run-off areas extend into the Adelaide Park Lands, the design minimises impacts on significant trees and valued vegetation to balance safety and environmental outcomes.
Outside event periods, gravel run-off areas in the Adelaide Park Lands will be restored to grass. Community feedback will help shape any potential further enhancements to these areas.
Air fences
These are soft crash barriers placed at specific points around the track, typically in front of harder walls or objects. Air fences help absorb impact during crashes.
Marshals
Trackside marshals play an important role in keeping riders safe. They monitor track conditions, communicate with Race Direction, display safety flags and respond quickly to incidents to help riders and keep the track safe.
